Maternity Reflexology
Reflexology for Maternity and Preparation for Birth
Pregnancy is exciting, emotional and life changing. During the nine months of pregnancy your body will go through significant changes, which will affect the emotional, hormonal and physiological balance of your body. For some women this can be a long period of discomfort and fatigue with nausea, headaches, backache and other conditions associated with pregnancy.
Having regular Reflexology treatments throughout pregnancy can help to alleviate or prevent discomfort arising from these imbalances and restore your body’s equilibrium.
Reflexology has shown to be excellent in treating these common conditions and in maintaining balance during the rapidly changing experience of pregnancy.
Research has shown that women who have regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy are more likely to have a shorter labour and require less pain relief. (Dr Gowri Motha “The Magic of Reflexology in Pregnancy”1994 study)

Reflexology post 37 Weeks
Preparation for Birth/Labour
Reflexology sessions are helpful in the final few weeks and days when stress and anxiety levels often rise. Stress hormones can delay the onset of labour so the more prepared and relaxed you feel, the better. Post 37 weeks specific reflexes are included, gently guiding the body into the optimum calm, endorphin-rich state conducive for natural labour to begin.
The recommendations are that at least two regular maternity sessions are essential before a Preparation for Birth session. This is because Preparation For Birth treatments incorporate a mixture of lighter and deeper pressure. At a deeper pressure there is more potential to experience a healing event, which can best be described as the body finding balance.
This may result in clients feeling temporarily unwell. this can be minimised by working-up, over time, to a deeper treatment.

Reflexology Post 41+ weeks
At 41 weeks with no previous Reflexology you can still have a reflexology session however to minimise a healing reaction a lighter pressure will be used. A Reflexology session will not force your body to do anything it isn't ready to do. Reflexology is simply an invitation and your baby will decide when ready.
Breech Baby
Reflexology can not move a breech baby but there is evidence of women whose babies have moved and turned after having a Reflexology treatment. The understanding is that Reflexology is deeply relaxing which may relax the pelvic girdle and nearby muscles helping to create space for the baby to turn, if it is safe for it to do so.
